First day of official fitness training tomorrow! I've now got two ponies to get fit, Cognac and Harry. Hopefully all the riding will get me fit too, although I do plan to fit some cross training, swimming and running and yoga to keep my muscle supple and loose. The ponies will be hacking in walk and trot for the next 6 weeks to build up a good base level of fitness. Although Cognac has been hacking out this month, Harry hasn't done any work for a few months now so they will both be starting their training from different points and I expect Cognac to get fitter quicker than Harry because of his type and temperament. This month I will also be playing with getting the horses used to each other and maybe turned out together and I'm going to put a tent in their field to see what they think! Katrina.

Personalised t-shirts and extra ponies

Today my friend Emily was telling me how her mum can make transfers for clothing and we decided that it'd be a great idea to get some t-shirts and hoodies done for the ride. We were thinking red hoodies (Emily wanted pink, but I refused!) with white writing. For writing we were thinking "JOGLE on horseback 2012- 1300 miles for charity"
I have also been talking to Lynn, my yard manager about the possibility of taking two horses with me and to ride and lead. This gives me the advantage of being able to carry more kit, so I can take a tent, which makes accommodation more flexible and gives me the option of two horses to ride so hopefully keeping the horses fresher and letting them "rest" more.

Route Planning

Yesterday Marcus and I sent an email to Ordanance Survey asking for advice on the best maps to use for our ride, either paper or digital. Today I have been using the BHS access site www.ride-uk.org.uk to find bridleways and routes to get us from JOG to LE. I've been reading about the Kenow horse trail which runs along bridleways and quiet lanes, with road crossings suitable for horses from Land's End to the Devon border.
